The classic white button-up shirt has been my go-to for as long as I can remember. My fashion foundation. My old faithful. My sure thing. Between juggling a baby and a toddler, I don’t often get the chance to spend as much time as I would like putting together my outfits, so the white button-up’s versatile nature has become an essential piece to my wardrobe. You can dress it up, dress it down, layer over it, layer under it, or even tuck it in. And of course, as a busy Momma of messy boys, I insist that my clothes be machine washable (none of this dry clean only business). Which means I do a lot of laundry around these parts. And I mean a lot. If you’ve seen my furniture (and now knowing how often I wear white button-up shirts), then you can understand why I’m always on the hunt for a detergent that will make my whites as bright as possible. I was recently given the chance to try Tide Pods, the only 3-chamber unit dose of detergent on the market. It’s a powerful 3-in-1 detergent that cleans, brightens, and fights stains. I already use Tide detergent, but I had never tried the Tide Pods before. And after I learned that just one removes more stains than 6 caps of the liquid bargain brand (based on stain removal performance of one pac of Tide Pods vs. 6 doses of the leading liquid bargain brand base variant in a standard top loading machine), I knew I would be hooked. And I was right! I threw my white shirt into the washer (covered in a lovely sneeze from my 6 month old baby) and it came out looking cleaner and brighter than ever.
Here are three different ways I like to style my bright white button-up. Be sure to visit the end of this post to enter a sweepstakes for a chance to win a $100 Visa Gift Card. And now, on to the looks: SPORTY/CASUAL This is my every day “mom uniform,” what I wear to run most of my errands. Boyfriend jeans, slip-on sneakers and a baseball cap are the perfect way to stay comfortable as an active and busy Mom. Also, the messy side-braid is a great way to disguise messy bed head.
LUNCH WITH THE GIRLS My girlfriends and I are pretty good about setting time out (away from the kids) to have lunch together in celebration of our birthdays. And on these days, I take off the ball-cap in favor of a little more feminine accessorizing–like this chunky statement necklace worn on the outside of my shirt. I also have fun layering sweaters and vests over a button up and pairing with colored denim (the possibilities really are endless). DINNER AND A MOVIE DATE NIGHT Ben and I don’t get the chance to sneak away for a date night all too often, so when we do I make sure I put on his favorite accessory–a pair of tall heels. I’m wearing another statement necklace in this outfit, however this time I’ve tucked it under the collar for a more subtle effect. It would be easy to pair this outfit with a blazer for those chilly evenings.
Pop in a whole new kind of clean with Tide Pods.

I think my colored jeans are versatile- I have them in red and bright blue. They can be worn casually, rolled up at the bottom, or tucked into boots with a blazer, or even paired with high heels and a cute blouse.
Julie
Hmm…something I love for multiple looks is probably a sparkly tank (but not TOO sparkly). I like to wear it by itself when the weather is hot in the summer and I want to look like I’m trying just a little, when the weather is a little chilly or windy with a wrap which adds sleeves and a little extra layer or for a bit of dressy I will put a cardigan on top or a funky jacket. It can be dressed up with a long strand of beads for a necklace, other large accent necklaces or a simple chain.
Ashley Marshall
I have a basic white cute cut shirt that I can wear with anything, dress it up, dress it down, I also have it in black and grey…
Ashley
Leggings!!! They are my go-to, rain or shine, summer or winter favorite. In the summer, I throw on a pair of cute sandals or wedges and a tank top for the days I’m too lazy to shave my legs. In the fall and spring they’re great with a cute sweater or shirt/cardigan combo and heels…although I’m more of a cozy sweater kind of girl. And in the winter, I pair them with boots. Either Ugg-style with a big slouchy sweatshirt (I’m all about cozy) or with cute riding-style boots and some layers. Maybe even a dress if I’m feeling ambitious.

Everything in my wardrobe is versatile meaning i mix an match everything. Which means I am certainly fashion challenged, but I do want to win because I do love Tide and I do keep my clothes clean, even if I don’t wear them like all the fashion bloggers out there.
Sandra
I would say my dark colored, great fitting jeans. I can wear them with a t-shirt or dress them up with heels, or pair them with a cardigan. They would be my go-to garment!
Nicole
My black turtleneck- it’s a thin, soft t-shirt material, which allows me to wear it on it’s own with jeans, under sweaters (I live in Wisconsin!) or over a sift dress to make that into a skirt!
Victoria
I, too, have several versatile pieces because I like being creative with my looks, trying new styles, and saving money with items I can wear lots of ways! Recently, a go-to piece has been my denim jacket. The best part about mine is that I’ve had it for years, just hoping it would come into fashion again. And it has in a big way. I’ve worn mine with all kinds of dresses and skirts: summer maxis, shorter & more tailored fits, and used it to make a more formal dress more casual. In slightly warmer weather I wear it with colored shorts with the sleeves rolled up for a dressed down look; I wear it with colored jeans and a white top, black jeans and any color top, or crazy printed jeans or leggings as the balance piece. And, I have worn it to work successfully as business casual attire; black slacks and a sweater look great under a basic denim jacket. It’s all about how you accessorize! Try it out!
kathy hanson
MMM…don’t have a lot of stuff, but I’d say my jeans are my most versatile 🙂
Erica Bravo
I would have to say my broken in straight khakis from GAP. LOVE them.. I have two, a coral and khaki color. I can wear some cute wedges and still be comfy. Heals will always dress them up. And of course my TOMS, they always look great with my khakis.

I have a bunch of things that are versatile (all in how you do it, right?), but one of my favorites is a 3/4 sleeve navy jacket that I love. I can dress it up with a skirt, top, and the right jewelry or wear it with jeans, a t-shirt, and scarf to go help at school.
Caroline
Mt favorite pair of leggings! I can west in the winter and style it up in the Summer. I think is quite versatile depending on your style.
Whitney
Well – I guess I need to go buy a white button down! 😉 I pretty much just wear yoga pants everyday … those are versatile, right?! 😉 haha. Oh and did I mention I don’t do yoga. Shame.
Missy
Thanks for the tips on how to wear the white button up shirt. I just bought a chambray button up shirt & this gives me some ideas on how to wear it. Thanks! I’m also going to try the Tide pods. Blessings, Missy
Kylee
Gotta be my white long sleeve layering tee. I can put it over a lace bottomed tank or put it under a cardigan/belt duo. Sometimes I cover it with a vest, Jean jacket, or just another colored layering tee. A must have for this mom -on-the-go!
Jenna
A great pair of dark jeans are great, they can be easily dressed up or down!
Becka H.
A bright cardigan. Can be worn with a basic tee, jeans and sneakers. Dressed up a touch with leggings, a pattern tank and tall black boots and a statement necklace. Or, belted over a gorgeous dress with some great jewelry for a night out.
Holly
A great pair of jeans are great, they can be easily dressed up or down! Looks like I need to get myself a couple button down shirts!
Lisa
Cute ideas for the white shirt. I think the jean look is my favorite. I somehow always feel frumpy in a white button up shirt, but you pull it off nicely.
Sandy A
For me–black pants–they go with every color and can be dressed up or down…
Jane Boiko
I think mine is leather jacket my husband got we for Thanksgiving. I wear it with jeans and t-shirts for a more casual look and also I wear it with some of my dresses and heals for an edgy look. Also it complements regular white shirt&blue jeans!
Anyway, I do like your shirt!
Aly
I love my black leggings from Gap. They are super thick, so they can be worn as dressy pants or casual pants. And so comfortable!
Mami2jcn
I have some black leggings that are very versatile. I can wear them with sandals and a sundress for a summer look, with UGG boots and a sweater during the winter, and with sneakers when I exercise.

Barbara
You have fabulous style—I have a lot of black in my closet, I need to get in more color!
One of my most versatile pieces is a sheer black button up. I can easily dress it up or down and it matches everything!
Melissa C.
One piece of clothing that I wear in manyyy different ways is the basic white tee. I wear it to the gym with compression capris, with a cardigan and a statement necklace for day wear or underneath a lacy top, etc. to go out. You can never go wrong with a basic white tee.
rosemariee
I think my most versatile clothing item is my dark wash skinny jeans!

My little black dress, I almost love accessorizing it for winter more than I do wearing it alone in summer!
Jess
My tall, slouchy brown boots. In fall, winter and spring these are my go to shoes. They are comfortable and super versatile. I pair them with dresses, skirts and bare legs, leggings, sweaters and slouchy sweatshirts and my normal and colored jeans. They literally go with anything and I can walk miles in them. They are starting to wear out so the Visa gift card would be a huge help in finding a suitable replacement when these fall apart. They are a staple in this busy girl’s lifestyle!
Erna
Love love love those black and gold booties!! Where can I get my hands on a pair?!
My go to is definitely something coral pink. I can dress that colour up and down and criss cross. I have a coral linen top I got for 2 dollars at my local Mango and it goes nicely tucked into my tailored silk skirts, great with my overly faded denim shorts and even on the beach for a quick cover up.

Hi Ashley!
All your looks are so cute! Just out of curiosity, and because I love a crisp white button down shirt myself, what brand do you prefer?
Jennifer
My most versatile item in my closet is an oatmeal colored cardigan from Fossil. I wear it with cute necklaces, scarves, colored jeans, blue jeans, skinny jeans and flats and skinny jeans and boots. I LOVE this sweater!
Shelbey
Versatile…versatile…I would have to say my favorite pair of gray Toms. I wear them with everything, for everything and in any weather. They are quite faded and worn out with some fraying even going on in the back.
I have been searching for a perfect white button up shirt for a couple of years. I have one, but it’s not the most versatile piece. Not too structured, a little see through, etc. Where did you stumble across yours?
Margaret Murphy
I have a a few cardigans that I can mix and match with anything… jeans, skirt, etc! This makes me want to get a white button up now! Thanks!

My go to any time of year is my Wilfred Diderot sweater from aritzia. It’s hard to describe but basically it’s is a long cardigan made of sweatshirt material. It is amazingly comfortable but still looks classic. I wear it with jeans leggings yogas and any top underneath it. It’s also reversible so it can be either a long sweater or a shorter bolero style jacket!

love this post ashley! one of my favorite staples too. miles has taken my dodger hat for the last time and lost it! i am dying without it:)
Tracy @ Ascending Butterfly
Me too! For me it’s a classic button down white shirt, it goes with skirts, suits and instantly classes up my favorite jeans, it can be worn alone or layered under a cardi or jacket, that’s definitely 3-in-1 action right there! But just in case you want me to pick a second thing since my to go item matches yours I’d say black skinny jeans as I can wear them with longer jackets on casual Friday for work, and then rock them on the weekends too!

Leggings are definitely my go to. I can throw them on with a flannel and combat boots, put them under a dress if it is chilly outside, wear them to workout in, or even put them on with a large sweatshirt when I am not feelin’ it. There are so many different ways to wear leggings and the best part is, they are SO comfortable!

After having kids, it is rare I find myself shopping anywhere but Target or Forever 21. However, on a fateful day two years ago with my mom and sister in town, I found myself perusing the Banana Republic clearance rack. And that’s when I saw it for $3.97. It is a turquoise jewel-tone cotton knit maxi skirt. It is as comfy as sweats, but makes me feel oh so chic in the 2 seconds it takes to throw on. And here are the three ways I wear it. I can pull up the waist to my bust and belt it, throw on some statement earrings and cowboy boots. I am instantly ready for girls’ night out or date night! If I need to put on something to run around town and do errands, I put on my trusty skirt with a tank top, sandals and a long necklace. Voila! Comfy as sweats, but way cuter! And to head to church I can dress up my skirt with a fun printed scarf and shawl cardigan. The best part about that, is when I get home to flip pancakes for Sunday brunch, I just throw back on my tank top and sandals and I am ready for a cozy Sunday with my hubby and kiddos! Even two years later this skirt is still in style. I just wish I had kept track of how many times I have worn it to do a cost per wear. At $3.97, I have definitely gotten my monies worth!

My fave 3-in-1 thing in my closet is a white tank dress i have. I can wear it alone or belted for casual warm days. I wear it as a slip under things that need a bit more coverage. Or I tuck it into a skirt and it doesn’t look like a dress at all! voila! the perfect 3-in-1

Love my black matte boot cut yoga pants. I can add a sparkly top, heels and jewelry and go to dinner; with a blazer, shirt and boots it’s daywear; with a tee and tennis shoes I’m sporty 🙂

My jeans are my favorite versatile item. Dress them up or make them super casual – they are great and make me feel great no matter what kind of day it is.

My go-to is my black pants. I can dress them up and down. Love Black.
Amy
white v-neck shirt from Target. 1) with jeans and flip flops for a casual hang out day; 2) as an undershirt to work, and 3) with a necklace, blazer and Toms for a night out 🙂

I would say one of my basics like my “little black dress” which is a basic sheath dress that fits me perfectly. I can add a blazer for work, some boots for my rainy commute, or nice red heels for a night out.
Bethany
My versatile wardrobe piece is my chambray button-up shirt from Target. I wear it with my hot pink dress pants, my chevron maxi skirt, and my white jeans. I LOVE it! 🙂
Tara
I have been loving my jean shirt this season. I pair it with black leggings and a baseball hat at home, with straight leg khacki jeans and heals to go out, or a black knit skirt and flats to run errands.

I’m not very good with fashion….I want to be but I’m just not good at throwing stuff together. I guess my favorite versatile thing right now is layering tank tops. I like being able to throw on a tank top, a cardigan and a scarf or a tank top, a cardigan and a belt. I do like having several tanks and several cardigans to mix and match.

A staple for me right now would have to be a gray Hanes,v neck tshirt I picked up at goodwill brand new of course for $0.99. I wear it with chuncky necklaces, cardigans, and blazers etc………
It has been worth every penny!!!

I love my LA Idol jeans. I can dress it down or not by what I wear for a top.

I have a horrible wardrobe right now, so I’d have to say that either jeans or leggings are my most versatile… I prefer the leggings – super comfy!
Sarah L
I have a pair of soft, black slacks that are as comfy as sweats but look great dressed up or down.
Thanks for the contest.
